Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic Chromebook updates

Google Extends Chromebook Update Support to a Decade

In 2012, Chromebooks launched with affordable prices, making computers more affordable for everyone. They became very popular in schools because they’re secure, easy to use, and budget-friendly. In fact, they are the most common devices used in K-12 education worldwide. They’re also eco-friendly, using recycled materials and repair programs to reduce their environmental impact and last longer.

Today, Google is introducing new ways to ensure your Chromebooks stay in great shape for even longer. All Chromebook models will receive ongoing automatic Chromebook update for a full decade. Which is longer than most other operating systems promise. We’re also collaborating with partners to create Chromebooks with more recycled materials from post-consumer sources (PCR). Additionally, we’re launching new energy-efficient features and faster repair processes. When a Chromebook reaches the end of its life, we’re committed to assisting schools, businesses, and users in finding the best recycling solutions.

If you have a Chromebook launched in 2021 or later, you’re in luck – you’ll automatically enjoy a full decade of support without any fuss. However, for those with devices released before 2021, there’s still an option to “extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release” after it gets its last update. The catch here is that it can get a bit tricky. Google’s definition of “platforms” is what’s inside a specific Chromebook, like its hardware and software. The challenge is that these platforms can vary from one manufacturer and model to another. So, an HP Chromebook might not receive the same level of support as one from Lenovo, and vice versa.

To determine the duration of support for your laptop, you can check your Chromebook model on Google’s Help Center website. For instance, the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook will continue to receive security patches until June 2032, provided you accept Google’s offer. On the other hand, the HP Chromebook G2’s security updates will last until June 2028 if you opt in. If you choose not to accept the offer, Google assures that its products still come equipped with robust built-in security features to safeguard user data.

New Features

Google emphasizes Chromebooks as a “sustainable choice” due to their incorporation of recycled materials, contributing to a reduced environmental footprint. Additionally, Google is introducing a novel protocol that enables authorized repair centers and school technicians to fix Chromebooks without the need for a physical USB key. Moreover, the company has future plans to introduce settings that enhance battery life and save energy.

Google also states it is pushing its partners to use more recycled materials in Chromebooks, and promises that new features like adaptive charging and battery-saver modes will help batteries last longer and reduce energy use, respectively.
